Single-site Wines

Elegant and powerful: the grapes for our single-site wines come only from selected parcels of our steep slopes – and only when we have been able to leave the fruit to ripen undamaged on the vine for as long as possible late into the autumn. The site’s initial on the matt silver label is a testament to the wine’s absolute individuality and a precise articulation of its origins.

Bacharacher Posten

Framed by vines, a mighty mediaeval watchtower springs suddenly from the steep slope: the Post Tower. Before it, the Rhine spreads like a giant silver mirror to reflect sunlight onto the wine terraces of Posten. This Riesling is a subtle and unmistakeable marriage of ripe, golden fruit aromas with crystalline clarity and mineral elegance.

BACHARACHER WOLFSHÖHLE

The most extensive area of Bacharach’s steep slopes is known as Wolfshöhle. It stretches from the edge of the village of Steeg to the western reaches of the Posten area on the flanks of Voigtberg mountain. These vineyards rise to an altitude of over 200 metres – making Wolfshöhle the sundeck overlooking our best sites. Here, the blue Devonian slate is veined with quartzite and the soil it supports is more thoroughly mixed with clay than in neighbouring Posten. The WOLFSHÖHLE-RIESLING is powerful and opulent, with brilliant fruit and a distinctly spicy aroma.

Steeger St. Jost

The vineyards of the village of Steeg are among the most outstanding areas for Riesling on the Middle Rhine, and St. Jost is the Steeg’s premier single-site wine. Here, the vines are rooted in a clayey slate soil that is shot through with pastel-coloured layers of aeolian sands. Our ST. JOST RIESLING is defined by its delicate, floral aroma. Graceful and lively, it maintains a buoyant lightness even after an extended stay in your wine cellar.

Terroir wines

Each unmistakable for a character that is all their own, these three wines perfectly embody the three Bacharach terroirs on which they are grown. The fertile floodplain sand on our wine island of Heyles’en Werth, the blue Devonian slate of our steep slopes, and the deep loamy soil of the first elevated terrace over the valley give rise to three highly expressive, authentic vintages.

BACHARACHER INSEL
„Heyles´en Werth“ RIESLING

Heyles’en Werth is the name of the romantic island in the Rhine that lies downstream of Bacharach. This seven-hectare island has belonged to our family since 1815, and thanks to its elevation far above the level of water in the Rhine it has always been the perfect place to grow fruit, cereals and wine. The island’s unique microclimate and fertile floodplain soil provide the ideal conditions for an exceptional wine: our BASTIAN INSEL-RIESLING with fresh notes of sweet lime, herbs and grapefruit.

BACHARACHER STEILLAGEN
ORION-RIESLING

The historic vineyards on Bacharach’s steep slate slopes are ideal not just for our Riesling vines. They also make the perfect home for the orion, a small blue butterfly that can survive here thanks to the protective way this traditional wine landscape is worked. Just like the blue butterfly depicted on its label, our Riesling from the best steep slate slopes is delicate, elegant and a breath of fresh air .

Bacharacher Spätburgunder

The fertile loam of the first elevated terrace over the Rhine Valley is the best place to grow Pinot Noir, a noble red wine grape. The deep soil with its even humidity brings forth a velvety Burgundy wine, BACHARACHER SPÄTBURGUNDER, with a remarkably intense colour and an aroma of ripe red forest fruits. This wine also spends several months maturing in small oak barriques, after which it leaves our cellars as the refined BASTIAN SPÄTBURGUNDER.

Full of life and variety, our estate wines will win you over with their charm: these down-to-earth, carefree ambassadors of the Middle Rhine are ideal companions to the everyday enjoyment of wine from the region.

BASTIANS ALDE´ FRITZ

“Every wine needs a face – even if that face has a hook nose and protruding ears.” That’s the legendary maxim of Fritz Bastian, the seventh Fritz to preside over the Zum Grünen Baum estate. So we named our distinctive, dry Riesling ALDE’ FRITZ in his honour. A robust product of the Middle Rhine that picks its own friends: hearty, fresh and headstrong.

BASTIAN SCHEUREBE

For a long time, the Scheurebe grape was believed to be a cross between Riesling and Silvaner. Now we know that Georg Scheu created this classic new crossing of modern grape variety  from Riesling and Bouquet Blanc. Scheurebe exudes an enchanting scent of blackcurrant, grapefruit and gooseberry, while its spicy, peppery palate is dry and refreshing – our fresh and zesty BASTIAN SCHEUREBE is a perfect choice as apéritif or as a simple accompaniment to any party.

The grapes are characterised by gentle fruit, mild acidity and soft tannins.

Meanwhile, the fertile loam of the first elevated terrace over the Rhine Valley gives the Blauer Spätburgunder grapes plenty of extract, density and a distinctive structure.

BASTIAN PORTUGIESER

Whether or not this variety with its opulent deep blue grapes really comes from Portugal is unclear. But the fruit of the Blauer Portugieser are guaranteed to deliver honest table wines with a velvety fullness. Our Portugieser vines are over forty years old, and their roots dig deep into the slate to give us a ruby-coloured, fruity red wine with mild acidity and soft tannins.

BASTIAN SCHEUREBE

In 1916 German viticulturalist Georg Scheu crossed Riesling with Bouquet Blanc, a vine that is unknown today. His successful result was the spicy, peppery Scheurebe variety with its unmistakeable aroma of blackcurrant, grapefruit and gooseberry. Our fruity BASTIAN SCHEUREBE is seductively sweet and yet refreshingly acidic, making it the perfect accompaniment to light Asian cuisine or for veal and poultry dishes.
